The days of the “merla” ( blackbird) are the last three days of January 29, 30 and 31 that are supposed to be the three coldest days of the year. Legend has it that once all merla birds were white. Long ago there was one very mild January. The birds mocked January because the winter was ending without frost. This angered January, and although it was the end of his days, he took revenge by bringing on bitterly freezing cold weather. For the great cold the white birds had to take refuge inside chimneys for three days becoming all black. So every year .according to tradition, if these days are cold, spring will arrive promptly and be beautiful, and if they are warm, spring will arrive late. Looking at all this “blossoming” going on, it seems like we are going to have one LONG winter !!!
