Pacifica Brandani was a italian nobile woman from Urbino, the lover of Duke Giuliano de’Medici. She was the illegitamate daughter of Giovanni Antonio Brandani, a courtier of the Court of Urbino. She is noted in history for having given Giuliano de’ Medici a natural son in 1511, who was then legitamized in Rome, Ippolito de’ Medici. He was the Duke’s only heir and later became a cardinal. Some historians, including the major expert on DaVinci Carlo Pedretti, have affirmed that the duke commissioned Leonardo, in April of 1515, to do a portrait to commemorate his lover who died while bearing his son and that “la Brandana da Urbino” is portrayed in the famous painting “La Gioconda” (Mona Lisa)
